Joan received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin.
She began a daily yoga practice in 1987, trained at the Kripalu Center in 1992, and has been teaching yoga since then. In 1992-93 she completed a year-long teacher training in Authentic Movement with Zoe Avstreih. In annual 5-day group retreats, she studied with Janet Adler from 1995 until Janet's death in 2023. She participated in Janet’s group studying the relationship between Authentic Movement and Jewish mysticism (now a peer group). She is faculty member of Circles of Four, a program that trains teachers of the Discipline of Authentic Movement.
Joan's interest in Jewish mysticism led her to study Kabbalah with Jason Shulman and to complete a four-year training in Nondual Kabbalistic Healing in 2007. She continues advanced studies, including Impersonal Movement and the MAGI process, with the Society of Souls.
With Annie Geissinger and Paula Sager, Joan was a founding co-editor of A Moving Journal, an international publication devoted to writings and art relating to Authentic Movement, during its thirteen years of publication from 1994-2006. You can see all the issues here.
