Joan received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin.
She began a daily yoga practice in 1987, trained at the Kripalu Center in 1992, and has been teaching yoga since then. In 1992-93 she completed a year-long teacher training in Authentic Movement with Zoe Avstreih. In annual 5-day group retreats, she has studied with Janet Adler since 1995. She participates in Janet’s group studying the relationship between Authentic Movement and Jewish mysticism (now a peer group). She is now on the faculty of Circles of Four, a teacher of the Discipline of Authentic Movement.
This interest in Jewish mysticism led Joan to study Kabbalah with Jason Shulman and to complete a four-year training in Nondual Kabbalistic Healing in 2007. She continues advanced studies, including Impersonal Movement, with the Society of Souls.
With Annie Geissinger and Paula Sager, Joan was a founding co-editor of A Moving Journal, the only international publication devoted to writings and art relating to Authentic Movement, during its thirteen years of publication.
